Prompt Engineering Basics: The Three Levers That Matter

"Prompt engineering" sounds technical, but at its core it's three levers you can pull on any prompt, no coding required.

Lever 1: Specificity

The single biggest driver of output quality. Replace every vague word with a concrete one. "Make it better" tells the model nothing; "tighten this to 3 sentences and cut the passive voice" tells it everything.

Lever 2: Examples (few-shot)

Show, don't just tell. Give the model one or two examples of the input-and-ideal-output pattern you want, and it will match the style far more reliably than a description alone.

Lever 3: Iteration

Your first prompt is a draft. Read the output, spot what's off, and add a sentence to fix it. Two or three passes usually gets you from 'okay' to 'ship it.'
